Sony Pictures Classics revealed on Wednesday that on August 23, it will open countrywide theaters showing Nathan Silver’s critically praised comedy Between the Temples, starring Jason Schwartzman (Asteroid City) and Carol Kane (The Dead Don’t Die).

The movie will launch against the following: Lionsgate’s version of The Crow starring Bill Skarsgärd; Affirm Films’ drama Between the Temples; Zoë Kravitz’s debut feature Blink Twice (Amazon MGM Studios); and Viva Pictures’ animated picture 200% Wolf.
Between the Temples is a quirky look at age-gap relationships and figuring out life after tragedy. It is funny, weird, and surprising. Nathan Silver’s humorous feature film, starring Jason Schwartzman, Carol Kane, Madeline Weinstein, Caroline Aaron, and Dolly de Leon, centers on 40-year-old cantor Ben Gottlieb as he gradually reintegrates into society following the death of his wife. Enter Carla, who taught Ben music in elementary school and was originally known to him as Mrs. O’Connor. Carla is hoping to celebrate her Bat Mitzvah, something she was not able to have as a child. Ben and she get along well right away because they both enjoy music, even before they start the lessons.
Despite its humor and often absurdity, Between the Temples has a sincere heart, especially when it comes to the themes of religion and doubting one’s faith. Ben’s incapacity to sing following the passing of his alcoholic author wife is indicative of his considerable amount of theological uncertainty and conflict. It’s also interesting to observe how their original dynamic as teacher and student has reversed, with Ben now acting as the teacher, and how that has affected how other people see them. For example, Judith has claimed that Carla groomed Ben, while Carla’s son and his family have expressed strong disapproval of Ben’s actions. Together, Schwartzman and Kane are a powerful force in getting the audience to laugh. Both actors are excellent comic actors on their own. Despite their lackluster romantic chemistry, the script’s superb execution pulls it off.
From a production standpoint, the movie heavily emphasizes the concept of judgment, whether it comes from oneself, the opinions of others, or religious leaders. This is accomplished by using a variety of close-up shots of background individuals, focusing on their faces to emphasize their enjoyment and contempt with Ben and Carla. Statues of Jesus and Mary, among other religious figures, are also treated to this same effect. Regarding Ben, the frequent usage of translucent and reflecting surfaces—from TV screens to windows and mirrors—emphasizes his identity dilemma. This artwork conveys the idea that Ben is incomplete and has shattered bits, and that he is gradually putting those pieces back together as he gets closer to Carla.
