Shaun Peterson’s film Lover of Men chronicles and examines President Abraham Lincoln’s amorous connections with men. Renowned Lincoln researchers create a personal picture of Lincoln’s intimate and passionate same-sex relationships using never-before-seen photos and letters. Lincoln, the 16th President, issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, midway through his term in office. He held the office from March 1861 to April 1865, when he passed away from a bullet wound sustained by John Wilkes Booth. “Forever free those slaves within the Confederacy,” it said.
In addition to setting stories about Lincoln’s connections with men in historical context, Lover of Men examines how attitudes toward marriage and sexuality differed in the 19th century from those in the modern era. In addition to being an intriguing piece of gay history, it raises important issues regarding how society currently views gender and sexuality.
Abraham Lincoln “has a type — dashing, daring,” according to one academic. Lincoln “probably slept in the same bed with men more than he did with women,” according to the same professor.
