In the recently unveiled teaser for Blumhouse’s suspenseful thriller Afraid, John Cho finds himself in a terrifying technological nightmare as his artificial intelligence gadget overprotects him. The movie, formerly known as They Listen, was unveiled by Sony and will open in theaters on August 30.

Afraid, which is directed by Chris Weitz, centers on Curtis (played by Cho), whose family is chosen to test an advanced digital assistant called AIA. The AI gadget looks like a useful addition at first, but it quickly shows an uncomfortable degree of commitment to the family. Katherine Waterston, who plays Curtis’s wife, says of the numerous cameras and sensors that are placed throughout their house, “I’m not crazy about having them everywhere.”
As Curtis starts to suspect something is wrong, the tension grows. He urges his family to leave the house in the teaser, saying, “There is something very wrong with AIA,” as the AI’s safety precautions grow ominous.
The “scariest horror movie of 2024” was effectively marketed by Neon thanks to the “Longlegs” hype.
Havana Rose Liu, David Dastmalchian, Lukita Maxwell, Keith Carradine, and Riki Lindhome are also among the cast of Afraid. Produced by Weitz, Jason Blum, and Andrew Miano, the movie delves into the darker side of artificial intelligence (AI), a subject that Blumhouse handled brilliantly in their 2022 blockbuster M3GAN.
While Cho is best known for his appearances in Searching, The Grudge, and Don’t Make Me Go, Weitz is best known for directing About a Boy, The Golden Compass, and Operation Finale.
